Even though global trends are dismal, the Nifty 50 index opened flat and optimistic at 18,008.05, up from yesterday’s close of 17,992.15. Prominent Wall Street indices slumped on Thursday as private employment figures for December 2022 came in better than predicted.

This reflects a healthy labour market, implying that the Fed may be willing to further boost interest rates. In the current environment, it is often assumed that any favourable news is negative for stock markets. Nasdaq Composite plummeted 1.47 per cent, Dow Jones Industrial Average sank 1.02 per cent, and the S&P 500 dropped 1.16 per cent in overnight trade.

The Nifty 50 was down by 74.5 points or 0.14 per cent, trading at 17,917.65 at 11:10 a.m. Broader market indices were performing mixed against frontline indices. Nifty Mid-Cap 100 index fell 0.29 per cent, while Nifty Small-Cap 100 index fell 0.41 per cent.

On the BSE, the advance-decline ratio was modestly unfavourable, with 1472 stocks gaining, 1769 dropping, and 145 remaining unchanged. All other sectors, excluding metals and FMCG, traded in the red.

Both FIIs and DIIs were net sellers, according to statistics dated January 5. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold shares worth Rs 1,449.45 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) sold shares to the tune of Rs 194.09 crore.
