Biocon settles Genentech disputes, secures 2027 EU and 2028 US launch window for Pebrilzo

Biocon has settled global disputes with Genentech, clearing a defined pathway for launches of its pertuzumab biosimilar Pebrilzo, subject to regulatory approvals.
Biocon Limited has entered into a global settlement and licence agreement with Genentech that provides defined launch windows for Pebrilzo, its biosimilar version of Perjeta, or pertuzumab, in key regulated markets.
Under the agreement, Biocon can launch Pebrilzo in the European Union and the UK from the first quarter of calendar 2027, while a US launch is permitted from the third quarter of calendar 2028. The company can also introduce the product in other Rest of the World markets between calendar 2026 and 2028, or earlier under certain circumstances.
The settlement resolves all pending disputes between Biocon and Genentech, including matters in the US, Canada and other jurisdictions. Financial and other commercial terms have not been disclosed. Crucially, the licensed launch dates do not amount to marketing approval, as each launch remains subject to clearance from the relevant regulator.
The agreement is strategically relevant because pertuzumab is used in the treatment of HER2-positive breast cancer across multiple stages of the disease. Pebrilzo contains pertuzumab, a monoclonal antibody that binds to HER2, a protein associated with the growth of certain cancer cells, and inhibits the proliferation of tumour cells that overexpress it.
For Biocon, the settlement creates a clearer commercial route for another oncology biosimilar asset, although the more meaningful US revenue opportunity is still more than two years away. The European launch window in early 2027 could offer an earlier opportunity to build market presence, provided regulatory approvals and market-access arrangements are secured.
The development fits Biocon's broader effort to refresh its biosimilars portfolio through new launches in oncology, diabetes and immunology. Biosimilars was the group’s largest business in FY26, reporting revenue of Rs 10,431 crore and accounting for about 60 per cent of the company’s business revenue mix. The segment generated an EBITDA margin of 26 per cent during the year, underlining its importance to the group’s profitability and growth strategy.
Management has previously identified sustained product launches as a key driver of future biosimilar growth, alongside deeper payer access and utilisation of recently expanded manufacturing capacity. The company has also highlighted its intention to pursue a new biosimilar launch in the US or Europe each year until the end of the decade. Pebrilzo adds visibility to that pipeline, though its financial contribution will depend on approval timing, pricing, competition and access to hospital, payer and tender channels.

Such disputes can delay launches or raise legal costs for biosimilar developers, making an agreed market-entry date particularly useful for planning manufacturing, regulatory submissions and commercial preparation. However, competition in biosimilars remains intense and Biocon will need to balance market-share ambitions with pricing discipline, an approach management has recently emphasised.
Biocon shares were trading at Rs 348.00 at 10:05 AM on October 14, 2026, down 0.87 per cent from the previous close of Rs 351.05. The stock was about 21.0 per cent below its 52-week high of Rs 440.70 and roughly 2.3 per cent above its 52-week low of Rs 340.15. Over one year, the shares gained 2.99 per cent, compared with a 5.70 per cent decline in the BSE 500.
The next milestones for Pebrilzo will be regulatory approvals and clarity on launch sequencing across markets, particularly in Europe ahead of the planned 2027 entry.
