The Income Tax Department acknowledged inaccuracies in emails sent under the Advance Tax e-Campaign and advised taxpayers to verify details through the compliance portal
On Saturday, March 14, 2026, several Taxpayers across the country were surprised after receiving emails from the Income Tax Department that highlighted “significant transactions” and raised the possibility of mismatches with the advance tax paid. The emails were part of the Advance Tax e-Campaign for the financial year 2026-27 (FY 2025-26), but the form of the emails caused confusion and surprise among the taxpayers as they resembled an official alert. Many taxpayers also reported that the transactions highlighted in the emails did not match the actual transactions.
Concerns Over Inaccurate Data
As more individuals began raising concerns, it became evident that the emails contained inaccurate or mismatched financial data, with some taxpayers receiving details that appeared unrelated or duplicated across multiple recipients. This raised questions about the reliability of the data used in the campaign and led to uncertainty among taxpayers and professionals, who initially perceived the communication as a potential compliance risk rather than a routine reminder.
Income Tax Department Issues Clarification
In a clarification posted on X (formerly Twitter), the Income Tax Department stated that it had received reports from taxpayers about the inaccuracy of the email communication pertaining to the ‘significant transactions’ emails sent as part of the ongoing campaign. The department acknowledged the issue and stated that it is working with the service provider to address the issue, while asking taxpayers to ignore the email communication for the time being.
The department further clarified that these communications are not notices but facilitative reminders, intended to help taxpayers review their financial transactions and ensure proper advance tax compliance. Taxpayers have been advised to verify their transaction details through the Compliance Portal on the e-filing website, rather than relying on the erroneous emails.
What Is the Advance Tax e-Campaign?
The Advance Tax e-Campaign is a move by the Income Tax Department with the objective of encouraging voluntary compliance with tax regulations by providing taxpayers with relevant information about their financial transactions as reported by third parties, for example, Banks and financial institutions. The Advance Tax e-Campaign is meant to assist taxpayers in examining their income and tax liability in advance, any inconsistencies, and timely payment of advance taxes. This is a facilitatory approach rather than an enforcement one.
