The corporate expectations of management graduates have evolved over time due to changing customer needs, business innovations, globalization, and the dynamic landscape of professional operations.
Corporate houses are looking for management graduates who are highly equipped with technology, functional knowledge, and behavioral skills. In order to meet the corporate requirements, it is essential for higher education business schools to train the students in such a way that they meet the corporate requirements closely. Another challenge is ensuring the sustainability of the training impact.
At the GNIOT Institute of Management Studies (GIMS), we have thoughtfully bifurcated the training program. Technical competence and Behavioral Competence. Technical competence includes domain expertise along with IT competence, while behavioral competence includes communication, adaptability, problem-solving, teamwork, time management, corporate etiquette, and a positive attitude. The next challenge was to design a strategy for infusing these skills among the students. We further bifurcated the entire training module into curriculum (credit) and co-curriculum (non-credit) buckets. The technical competencies are largely mapped onto the 114-credit curriculum structure, and the behavioral competencies are mapped onto co-curricular activities. Further, GIMS established a fully functional Learning and Development department with a focus on delivering cocurricular activities pertaining to behavioral competence. The design for honing behavioral competence in each student includes:
- 100-120 contact hours of delivery for all aspects (LSRW) of communication. The communication modules are delivered by the British School of Language. In addition, the institute has an AICTE-recommended communication lab; students use this lab tool for practicing.
- 40–45 hour delivery on soft skills training through an exclusive soft skills training program called "tutelage.", This program is led by Mr. Sonu Sharma, a leading soft skills trainer in the country.
- 50-60 hours of delivery on aptitude and logical reasoning. This training is also delivered in close association with the best practitioners in the country.
Apart from training modules, the institute has nearly 80-100 corporate interactions through various programs and talk series. Industry leaders, functional managers, and decision-makers interact on various platforms with the students of GIMS. The first talk series is named Chanakya Talk Series (CTS), which invites industry leaders to interact with the students so that students can gauge the vision of corporate leaders. The second talk series is called Prabodhan Talk Series (PTS). This talk series is aimed at understanding the expectations of functional managers from fresh recruits. The third talk series is named Samarik Talk Series (STS). This talk series invites leaders from defense forces so that students can understand the leadership style of the most efficient organizations.
We at GIMS also make crucial assessments of the training programs, as it is important to understand (a) the effectiveness of the training program and (b) the alteration of the training program as per the needs of the students. We follow the in-house developed indexing mechanism for the students called Employability Skill Indexing (ESI). The students are accessed on various parameters during induction and then divided into different cohorts. These cohorts are delivered with tailor-made modules as described above and accessed once again on the particular skills. The cohorts are re-defined, and next-level tailormade modules for different groups are delivered. The assessments keep getting more complicated with each level. A GIMS student goes through five assessments and five training modules of different levels during the course. Apart from in-house practices, we also keep on providing exposure via international immersion programs, stride series, live projects, internships, self-directed learning, and industry-driven certificates.
The result of these unique and robust practices reflects the quality of our ever-improving admissions and placement records. We are committed to supporting the dynamic corporate environment by developing the capabilities of youth in alignment with corporate needs.
