Rs 21,700 Crore Order Book: Defence Shipbuilding Company Signs 5 MoUs with DPA, SMPA, IPRCL, SCI and MIPL; Expands Horizons in Maritime Sector

At Bhavnagar's 'Samudra Se Samriddhi' Mission, launched by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) took a significant step towards India's goal of becoming one of the world's top five shipbuilding nations by 2047. Cmde PR Hari, IN (Retd.), Chairman & Managing Director, GRSE, highlighted the company's commitment to revitalising the sector and contributing to maritime self-reliance. He emphasised that the MoUs would help create a collaborative ecosystem where various partners work together to support the Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Maritime Amritkal vision.

The MoUs were signed on behalf of GRSE by Cmde A Vinith, IN (Retd.), Chief General Manager, with five key partners: Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), Kandla; Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority, Kolkata (SMPA); Indian Port Rail & Ropeway Corporation Limited (IPRCL); The Shipping Corporation of India (SCI); and Modest Infrastructure Private Limited (MIPL). These agreements are designed to provide a formal structure for GRSE and its partners to collaborate on a variety of projects.

This new framework will allow the organisations to jointly explore and develop projects in diverse areas such as new vessel construction, including green and low-emission ships, ship repair, and building green tugs. Additionally, the partnerships will focus on developing and maintaining port infrastructure, creating jetties and berths, and improving multimodal logistics and last-mile connectivity. These collaborations aim to build sustainable and globally competitive solutions that will shape the future of Indian shipbuilding.

About the Company

Originally established in 1884 as a small workshop, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) was nationalised by the Government of India in 1960. As a Defence Public Sector Undertaking, GRSE holds the distinction of being the first Indian shipyard to build a warship for the Indian Navy. The company has since expanded its capabilities, building over 800 platforms, including 114 warships, the highest number by any Indian shipyard. Beyond shipbuilding, GRSE has diversified into engineering, producing prefabricated steel bridges and marine diesel engines, and it can now concurrently construct up to 28 ships at its four shipyards.

Revenue from operations also saw a significant surge, climbing to Rs 5,076 crore in FY25 from Rs 3,593 crore in the previous year, representing a 41 per cent increase. Profit After Tax (PAT) witnessed an impressive 48 per cent growth, rising to Rs 527 crore in FY25 from Rs 357 crore in FY24. The President of India’s portfolio owns 8,53,41,240 shares or 74.50 per cent stake in the company as of June 2025. The order book as of June 30, 2025, stands at Rs 21,700 crore.
