Rs 21,700 Crore Order Book: Defence Shipbuilding Company Signs MoU with Centum Electronics for High-Tech Navigation System

In a significant step towards advancing indigenous capability in high-technology navigation systems for the Indian Navy, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Centum Electronics Limited, a Bengaluru based public limited company offering design, development and manufacturing of customised systems/subsystems for high reliability applications in Defence, Aerospace and Space, Industrial and Healthcare sectors. The MoU was signed on 08 Oct 2025 at GRSE Bhavan, Kolkata.

Cdr Shantanu Bose, IN (Retd), Director (Shipbuilding), GRSE, and Shri Nikhil Mallavarapu, Joint Managing Director, Centum Electronics Limited, signed the MoU in the presence of Cmde PR Hari, IN (Retd), Chairman & Managing Director, GRSE; & Shri Apparao V Mallavarapu, Chairman & Managing Director, Centum Electronics Limited. Also present during the occasion were Dr Vinod S Chippalkatti, President (SEBU), Centum Electronics Limited; Shri R Venkatasubramanian, General Manager, Centum T&S Pvt Ltd; Cmde Rajiv Sreedharan, IN(Retd.), Chief General Manager (Design), GRSE and other senior officials from GRSE.

The MoU establishes a collaborative framework between GRSE & Centum Electronics, which aims at the joint research and development (R&D) of Advanced Naval Navigation Systems. This partnership shall focus on leveraging and enhancing manufacturing infrastructure for components and sub-assemblies of these systems, including Onboard Installation, Integration, Setting to Work and Trials, and shall also provide services for the modernisation and upgrade of existing Systems.

This collaboration represents an important milestone in GRSE’s continued efforts to expand its technological horizons and support the Government of India’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative by fostering indigenous R&D and manufacturing in advanced defence systems

About the Company

Originally established in 1884 as a small workshop, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) was nationalised by the Government of India in 1960. As a Defence Public Sector Undertaking, GRSE holds the distinction of being the first Indian shipyard to build a warship for the Indian Navy. The company has since expanded its capabilities, building over 800 platforms, including 114 warships, the highest number by any Indian shipyard. Beyond shipbuilding, GRSE has diversified into engineering, producing prefabricated steel bridges and marine diesel engines, and it can now concurrently construct up to 28 ships at its four shipyards.

Revenue from operations also saw a significant surge, climbing to Rs 5,076 crore in FY25 from Rs 3,593 crore in the previous year, representing a 41 per cent increase. Profit After Tax (PAT) witnessed an impressive 48 per cent growth, rising to Rs 527 crore in FY25 from Rs 357 crore in FY24. The President of India’s portfolio owns 8,53,41,240 shares or 74.50 per cent stake in the company as of June 2025. The Order Book as of June 30, 2025, stands at Rs 21,700 crore.
