SIFs: The Middle Path Needs a Careful Walk

I have been closely following the Indian mutual fund industry for the last 25 years.

I have been closely following the Indian Mutual Fund industry for the last 25 years. I have witnessed numerous product innovations, some truly enriching investor choices while others merely added layers of complexity. Specialised Investment Funds (SIFs) have arrived at a significant moment in India’s wealth creation journey. Today’s affluent investors are no longer satisfied with plainvanilla mutual funds, yet many remain hesitant to enter the high-ticket and relatively less transparent world of Portfolio Management Services (PMS) and Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs). SIFs aim to fill this important gap by offering a well-regulated middle path.[EasyDNNnews:PaidContentStart]

Our cover story this issue aptly describes SIFs as ‘the third path’ between mass-market mutual funds and high-end PMS/AIF structures. The early traction is encouraging. Within just six months of launch, SIFs have attracted over 40,000 investors and gathered `10,620 crore in assets under management as of March 2026. However, nearly 75 per cent of this AUM is concentrated in hybrid long-short funds, indicating that the category is still evolving and has not yet become a broad-based offering.

This early momentum, however, should not be mistaken for automatic suitability. In my long experience, SIFs are not a shortcut to higher returns. These are strategy-led products whose performance will depend heavily on the fund manager’s skill, disciplined use of derivatives, effective liquidity management, and strong risk controls. I firmly believe SIFs are not meant for new or novice investors. They are best positioned as sophisticated asset allocation tools rather than pure return-enhancement vehicles.

The core message for investors is one of clarity and caution. SIFs can become a valuable innovation in India’s wealth market, but only if approached with proper understanding. They can be useful for experienced investors seeking a tactical allocation. However, chasing them merely for their sophisticated appeal carries a clear risk, complexity without understanding can quickly turn into an expensive mistake.

As always, our endeavour remains to help you navigate these emerging opportunities with eyes wide open. Proceed with knowledge, not just curiosity.
