Equity markets remain shut on June 26 on account of Muharram, while MCX will reopen for trading in the evening session from 5:00 PM.
Indian benchmark equity markets are closed on Friday, June 26, 2026, as the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) observe a trading holiday on the occasion of Muharram. There will be no trading in the equity, equity derivatives, currency derivatives, securities lending and borrowing (SLB), or electronic gold receipts (EGR) segments during the day.
BSE, NSE Closed For Muharram
Muharram, the first month of the Islamic Hijri calendar, marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year and is one of the four sacred months in Islam. The occasion is observed as a public holiday across several parts of India, resulting in the closure of domestic stock exchanges.
The Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) will remain closed during the morning trading session between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM. However, commodity derivatives trading will resume in the evening session from 5:00 PM to 11:30 PM. Meanwhile, the National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) will remain closed for the entire day.
Markets Ended Previous Session Marginally Higher
Ahead of the market holiday, Indian benchmark indices ended Thursday's session marginally higher despite profit booking in the second half of trade.
The Nifty 50 opened nearly 100 points higher and extended gains during the session before touching an Intraday high of 24,261.60. However, profit booking erased most of the gains by the close.
At the closing bell, the Nifty 50 settled at 24,056, gaining 34.35 points or 0.14 per cent, while the Sensex rose 109.25 points or 0.14 per cent to close at 77,100.47. The Bank Nifty ended marginally higher by 0.05 per cent, touching a three-month high during the session, while India VIX declined nearly 2.5 per cent, reflecting easing market volatility.
The benchmark indices have advanced nearly 4 per cent over the previous nine trading sessions, supported by improving global sentiment following the announcement of a ceasefire between the United States and Iran. During the holiday-shortened week, the Nifty 50 gained 0.18 per cent, registering its third consecutive weekly advance.

Brent Crude Extends Decline
Global crude oil prices continued to soften, providing support to investor sentiment. Brent crude futures declined 0.73 per cent to USD 74.41 per barrel, extending losses for the fourth consecutive session as concerns over Middle East supply disruptions eased amid optimism surrounding a lasting peace agreement between the United States and Iran.
Lower crude oil prices are generally considered positive for India's economy, as the country imports a significant portion of its crude oil requirements.
Upcoming Stock Market Holidays In 2026
Following the Muharram holiday, Indian stock markets will observe six more trading holidays during the remainder of 2026. The next market holiday will fall on September 14 on account of Ganesh Chaturthi, followed by October 2 for Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti and October 20 for Dussehra. Later in the year, the exchanges will remain closed on November 10 for Diwali Balipratipada, November 24 for Guru Nanak Jayanti, and December 25 for Christmas. These holidays apply to both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE).
