Quarterly Profit Jumps 35 Per Cent

Tamilnad Mercantile Bank reported a net profit of Rs 412 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, marking a 35 per cent increase from Rs 305 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. On a sequential basis, profit grew 10 per cent from Rs 374 crore recorded in the March 2026 quarter. Interest earned for the quarter rose 20 per cent YoY to Rs 1,662 crore, compared with Rs 1,386 crore in Q1 FY26, reflecting sustained expansion in the bank's lending book.

Trading volume for the session stood at 18 lakh shares, against the 30-day average of approximately 3 lakh shares, pointing to a sharp spike in investor interest following the results announcement.

Loan Book Expands 28 Per Cent; Deposits Rise 20 Per Cent

Advances grew 28 per cent YoY to Rs 57,041 crore as of June 30, 2026, compared with Rs 44,733 crore a year earlier. Deposits kept pace, rising 20 per cent to Rs 64,409 crore from Rs 53,803 crore in the year-ago period.

Retail banking remained the dominant contributor across both revenue and profitability. Segment revenue from retail banking reached Rs 1,422 crore in Q1 FY27, up from Rs 1,116 crore a year ago, while segment profit stood at Rs 443 crore against Rs 261 crore in the same period last year. Corporate and wholesale banking delivered a steady performance, with segment revenue of Rs 161 crore and segment profit of Rs 50 crore for the quarter.

Asset Quality Improves Sharply; NPA Ratios at Multi-Year Lows

The improvement in asset quality was among the standout features of the Quarterly Results. Gross non-performing assets declined to 0.69 per cent of advances from 1.22 per cent a year ago, while net NPA fell to 0.17 per cent from 0.33 per cent. The reductions indicate that legacy stress accumulated in prior periods has been substantially resolved.

Provisions for the quarter stood at Rs 53.93 crore, compared with Rs 8.34 crore in Q1 FY26. While the YoY increase in provisioning may appear cautionary in isolation, the simultaneous fall in both gross and net NPA ratios suggests the bank is building coverage from a position of strength rather than responding to fresh deterioration in the portfolio.

Capital Adequacy and Returns Strengthen

The capital adequacy ratio under Basel III came in at 32.33 per cent for the June quarter, up from 31.55 per cent a year ago, remaining well above the regulatory minimum. Return on assets improved to 2.14 per cent from 1.82 per cent in Q1 FY26, and the net profit margin widened to 21.65 per cent from 18.85 per cent. Earnings per share for the quarter rose to Rs 25.99 from Rs 19.25 in the year-ago period.
