In a significant move towards sustainable bioenergy and carbon neutrality, Organic Recycling Systems Limited (ORSL) has launched a groundbreaking BioCCUS (Biological Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Sequestration) research platform. This initiative, developed in collaboration with IIT Bombay and IIT Kharagpur, aims to revolutionise the handling of CO₂ emissions from biogas plants by capturing and converting them into valuable biofuels and biochemicals. Formalised through Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), the project seamlessly integrates biological and catalytic CO₂ conversion pathways into a single, scalable biorefinery model, as highlighted by Prof. Indrajit of IIT Bombay, who emphasised the real-world validation and scaling of algal photobioreactors for transforming carbon into resources with high oil yields and phytochemical recovery.
At the core of this innovation is an anaerobic digester that processes Napier grass to generate biogas. The resulting CO₂-rich fraction is then purified and directed into two parallel pathways. At IIT Bombay, the CO₂ is utilised for algal cultivation to produce bio-oil and nutraceutical compounds. Simultaneously, IIT Kharagpur employs photocatalytic conversion to synthesise C₂–C₅ mixed alcohols, which serve as precursors for jet fuel, utilising ambient light and mild conditions as noted by Prof. Koustuv Ray. This BioCCUS platform offers a truly circular solution, encompassing CO₂ capture, bio-CNG generation, value-added chemical production and the utilisation of digestate as biofertilizer, resulting in a zero-waste, multi-output biorefinery that aligns with India's Net Zero 2070 and Atmanirbhar Bharat missions.
