CCI Fines Rs 2545 Crore Penalty On 14 Car Makers

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has fined major car makers for suppressing competition in the market for spare parts, just days after authorities in China doled out similar penalties on Japanese car makers.

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has fined major carmakers for suppressing competition in the market for spare parts, just days after authorities in China doled out similar penalties on Japanese carmakers.

The companies failed to make genuine spare parts available in the open market, the CCI said in a statement late on Monday. Their anti-competitive conduct “has restricted the expansion of spare parts and independent repairers segment of the economy to its full potential, at the cost of the consumers, service providers and dealers”, the commission said. The CCI estimated that 20 million consumers in the country have been affected.

“The absence of appropriate legislative and regulatory framework for safety and standards relating to spare parts and after sales services is a handicap,” the CCI said. “This is something which may be separately brought to the notice of the government for appropriate action.”
