Uttarakhand High Court has asked the state government to put a complete ban on sale and consumption of liquor in three districts where the four famous Himalayan shrines also known as the 'Chardham' are located. The government proposes to impose a complete ban on liquor in Rudraprayag, Chamoli and Uttarkashi districts from the next fiscal year, i.e. FY18.
A government order dated February 24, 2002 prohibits sale and consumption of liquor in Haridwar because of the religious significance of the place. The high altitude Kedarnath and Badrinath shrines are in Rudraprayag and Chamoli districts, respectively, whereas Gangotri and Yamunotri shrines are situated in Uttarkashi district.
Right now, states such as Gujarat, Nagaland, Kerala have phased out consumption of liquor and imposed complete ban on alcohol. In the Union territory of Lakshwadeep liquor is not widely available and a complete ban is in place. Bihar is also in the process of banning liquor in a phased out manner.
The liquor-specific stocks such as Radico Khaitan, United Spirits, United Breweries and Pincon Spirits will be watched on Monday. The share price of Radico Khaitan, United Spirits, United Breweries reduced by 0.54 per cent, 1.96 per cent, 1.71 per cent and closed at 119.05, Rs 1914.9 and Rs 841 on intraday basis, respectively. Meanwhile, share price of Pincon Spirits increased by 1.04 per cent on the bourses and closed at Rs 62.95 on intra-day basis.
