However, the market expected a reduction in repo rate (short-term lending rate) by 25 basis points (bps) to 6 per cent. One bps is a hundredth of a percentage point.
Inflation remains low at 3.4 per cent, which is below RBI's target.
Meanwhile, at the time of the announcement, the benchmark Sensex and Nifty50 were trading over half a per cent down.
