The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) in support of mentioning maximum retail price on package of medical devices said in a statement that the manufacturers must be overcharged with interest if they do not comply with the said rule.

Under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 22 medical devices including syringes, needles and catheters notified by the government must display their maximum retail price on their packages. 4 medicinal devices out of the 22 are kept under price control, while the remaining 18 may have hike in their prices by 10 per cen5 annually.

Manufacturers were also directed to issue a price list of the notified medical devices to dealers, state drug controllers and governments indicating changes from time to time, NPPA said.

NPPA has been aggresively working  to put a check on the malpractices related to medical devices, also ensuring that the patients are not overcharged for the products.

On February 13, 2017 NPPA fixed a price celing on bare metal stents at Rs7,260. While, the maximum prices of drug-eluting stents and biodegradable stents were set at Rs29,600 in an attempt to economize treatments for the patients.
