On Wednesday, fair and remunerative price (FRP) of sugarcane raised by the Central government from Rs 230 per quintal to Rs 255/quintal (about 10.6 per cent higher than current level) for the well-being of core farmers of the cane producing states. FRP has legally guaranteed the minimum price that the farmers will get. While this decision was taken by the Union Cabinet Committee on the Economic Affairs which is expected to affect almost 50 million farmers.
States like Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana have their own state advisory price which is probably higher than Centre’s FRP. UP had fixed the SAP for the current 2016-17 year at Rs 305 and Rs 315 a qtl for two varieties of cane.
The sugarcane price slipped by over 12 per cent 306.03 million tonnes due to drought in key sugarcane producing states like Maharashtra and Karnataka. Though market observers think that the prospects are bright in 2017-18 as the Met Department has predicted a normal monsoon.
