Kharif crop sowing reaches 976 lakh hectare area

Kharif crops or monsoon crops are plants that are cultivated and harvested in South Asia during the rainy season, which lasts from April to October, depending on the area.

As per data published by the Ministry of Agriculture, the total sown area as on August 18, 2017 stood at 976.34 lakh hectare as compared to 984.57 lakh hectare (ha) at this time last year. Rice has been sown or transplanted in 341.58 lakh ha, pulses in 130.68 lakh ha, coarse cereals in 171.75 lakh ha, sugarcane in 49.78 lakh ha, and cotton in 118.14 lakh ha whereas sowing of oilseeds stood at 157.36 lakh ha as against 175.10 lakh ha sown in 2016-17 and sowing of jute and mesta stood at 7.05 lakh ha as compared to 7.56 lakh ha sown in 2016-17.
