Markets Buckle At Closing

The leading indices suddenly took a turn downward after mid-session. Nifty saw some choppy trades at closing, down by 40 points at 6160, and Sensex was down 40 points at 20708. Among the sectors, only the Metal index saw some buying.
After low movement in mid-session, the indices suddenly took a turn downward. Nifty saw some choppy trades at closing, down by 40 points at 6160, and Sensex was down 40 points at 20708. Both the indices ended lower in the range of 0.65%-0.70%.
On the NSE, the advance-decline ratio was on the negative side, with 1524 shares closing in the green and 1734 shares in the red.
Top 5 Nifty Gainers: Tata Power closed with the strongest gains on the index, up by 2.5%. PNB, Power Grid, NMDC and Wipro were among the others that ended the day higher.
Top 5 Nifty Losers: Hindalco closed lower by 2.7% today, followed by IDFC, ITC, Ranbaxy Labs and ONGC.
Most of the sectoral indices closed in negatives. Auto was down by 128 points, Capital Goods lost 98 points and Bankex dropped by 54 points. FMCG, Oil & Gas and Healthcare closed lower in the range of 50-80 points. Mid-Caps and Small-Caps were also in the red zone. Only Metal retained its momentum, closing higher by 24 points.
In the Asian markets, Nikkei was down 341 points by day’s end and Hang Seng was down by 181 points. Shanghai Composite and Taiwan Weighted were in gains of 25 points each.
Buzzer: Wipro saw bulk buying on the bourses in the closing session, making an intraday high of Rs 494 and closing around the technical level of Rs 485. If the stock opens above this level tomorrow, it may continue with the positive momentum and may break its 52-week high of Rs 519.
Nifty Futures’ trend indicates a big move going ahead, and 6170 will be a major support level.
