Aditya Birla Group Enters Wires and Cables Market With Rs 1,800 Crore Ultravolt Bet

For the Aditya Birla Group, the Ultravolt launch represents another step towards building businesses around long-term growth themes while leveraging its existing ecosystem, distribution capabilities and operational expertise.

Key Takeaways

The Aditya Birla Group has entered India’s wires and cables market with the launch of Ultravolt, a new business housed under UltraTech Cement. Backed by an investment of Rs 1,800 crore, the venture marks the group’s fourth major new business initiative in three years as it expands beyond its traditional businesses.

Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla said new businesses have become an important part of the group’s growth strategy, supported by its capital strength, brand value, scale and understanding of adjacent markets. The group sees wires and cables as a structurally growing sector, driven by rising urbanisation, electrification, infrastructure development and increasing demand from data centres.

Ultravolt will begin operations as the second-largest player in the wires segment by capacity and aims to become one of the top two companies in the category within five years.

Pan-India Rollout Across 500 Districts and 6,000 Pin Codes

Ultravolt plans to launch at a national scale from the beginning rather than following a regional expansion strategy. The company aims to reach more than 1 lakh retailers and strengthen its distribution through over 5,000 UltraTech Building Solutions outlets.

The business will initially cover more than 500 districts and 6,000 pin codes, supported by over 20 warehouses and UltraTech’s existing relationships with home builders, contractors, Real Estate developers and EPC companies.

Ultravolt will offer home wires, flexible wires and cables for residential, commercial, industrial and infrastructure applications. Over time, the company plans to expand into a wider range of electrical accessories.

Manufacturing Facility Adds to Capacity Advantage

Ultravolt’s operations are anchored by a new manufacturing facility at Jhagadia in Bharuch district, Gujarat. The plant started commercial production on September 1, 2026, with an installed capacity of 10,98,000 kilometres.

The company plans to compete through product quality, technology, availability and customer service rather than focusing solely on pricing. The entry also enables UltraTech to expand its presence across the Construction value chain beyond cement, ready-mix concrete and building products.

Why Is Aditya Birla Group Entering the Wires and Cables Market?

India’s wires and cables industry is benefiting from rising demand across housing, infrastructure projects, renewable energy, electric vehicles, power distribution upgrades and data centre expansion.

The industry is also witnessing a shift towards organised players as consumers and institutions increasingly prioritise safety, quality and brand reliability. The Aditya Birla Group believes its existing distribution network and construction ecosystem can provide an advantage in scaling the new business.

Impact on Listed Wires and Cables Companies

The entry of a large industrial group into the segment has raised competitive concerns among existing listed players. Shares of established wires and cables companies came under pressure after the announcement as investors assessed the potential impact of a well-capitalised new entrant.

The long-term impact will depend on how quickly Ultravolt builds its distribution network, gains market share and manages margins. Increased competition could put pressure on pricing power across the industry. However, the expansion of the overall market, supported by infrastructure development and electrification, could continue to provide growth opportunities for multiple players.

For the Aditya Birla Group, the Ultravolt launch represents another step towards building businesses around long-term growth themes while leveraging its existing ecosystem, distribution capabilities and operational expertise.
