Dolly Khanna-Held Multibagger Stock Announces Highest-Ever Interim Dividend Since Listing; Net Profit Triples, FIIs and DIIs Increase Stakes

The company has now reported a sharp improvement in its September-quarter performance, helped by stronger refining economics and high operating utilisation despite planned maintenance at one crude unit.

✨ Key Takeaways

Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd (CPCL) operates a refinery-led business in which earnings are closely linked to the spread between crude costs and petroleum-product realisations. The company has now reported a sharp improvement in its September-quarter performance, helped by stronger refining economics and high operating utilisation despite planned maintenance at one crude unit.

Revenue from operations for the quarter ended September 30, 2026, rose 10 per cent YoY to Rs 22,109 crore. Profit before Tax climbed to Rs 3,032 crore from Rs 994 crore, while profit after tax (PAT) more than tripled to Rs 2,271 crore from Rs 732 crore.

The key driver was the gross refining margin (GRM), which rose to USD 20.41 per barrel from USD 9.04 per barrel in the corresponding quarter last year. GRM measures the difference between the value of refined products and the cost of crude oil, before operating costs. CPCL processed 2.590 million metric tonnes of crude during the quarter, translating into 98 per cent capacity utilisation despite the turnaround maintenance programme.

For the half year ended September 30, 2026, revenue from operations increased to Rs 51,486 crore from Rs 38,762 crore. Profit before tax rose to Rs 4,397 crore from Rs 914 crore, while PAT increased to Rs 3,288 crore from Rs 675 crore. The first-half GRM stood at USD 14.34 per barrel, compared with USD 6.17 per barrel a year earlier. Crude throughput for the six months was 5.438 million metric tonnes, with capacity utilisation of 103 per cent.

Chennai Petroleum Highest-Ever Interim Dividend in its History

On a consolidated basis, CPCL recorded PAT of Rs 3,278 crore for the first half, against Rs 694 crore in the year-earlier period. The board also declared an interim Dividend of Rs 25 per equity share of face value Rs 10 for FY2026-27. The payout follows a period in which the company has focused on refinery reliability, crude flexibility and a higher-value product mix, including investments in speciality products and lube oil base stocks.

Chennai Petroleum Share Price

As of 10:21 am on October 26, 2026, CPCL shares were trading at Rs 1,520.65, up 2.88 per cent from the previous close of Rs 1,478.10. The stock was about 6.5 per cent below its 52-week high of Rs 1,625.90. Over one year, the shares have gained 83.96 per cent, while the BSE 500 declined 8.25 per cent over the same period. The stock price has more than doubled in the last two years, delivering multibagger returns.

Dolly Khanna Stake; FIIs and DIIs Increase Their Stake

Ace investor Dolly Khanna held a 1.02 per cent stake in Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited, according to the shareholding pattern for the quarter ended September 2026. Interestingly, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) increased their stake from 14.98 per cent in the June 2026 quarter to 15.79 per cent in the September 2026 quarter. Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) also raised their stake from 1.10 per cent to 1.18 per cent during the same period.

What This Means for Investors

The September-quarter numbers reinforce CPCL’s ability to convert high refinery utilisation into strong profitability when product cracks are favourable. The 98 per cent utilisation achieved despite maintenance, along with 103 per cent utilisation in the first half, supports the company’s operational execution record. Higher margins also provide internal financial capacity for the Group II and III lube oil base stocks project and the retail-marketing expansion programme.

The result is supportive for the business case, but earnings visibility remains tied to refining-margin cycles. The September-quarter GRM of USD 20.41 per barrel was substantially above the year-earlier level and may not represent a normalised earnings run rate. Investors will need to track crude-product spreads, refinery availability after maintenance, foreign-exchange exposure and execution on higher-value product projects. CPCL’s net debt of Rs 974 crore at March 31, 2026, provides balance-sheet flexibility, while the interim dividend signals confidence in current cash generation.
