The Nifty IT index, which had surged more than 5 per cent in early trade, also pared some of its gains and was up around 3.4 per cent. Coforge was an exception within the IT pack, with the stock declining more than 3%. Meanwhile, the Nifty Realty, Nifty Metal and Nifty PSU Bank indices were down more than 1 per cent each.

Market breadth within the Nifty 50 remained extremely weak. Of the 50 constituents, only 12 stocks were trading in the green, while 38 were in the red. ICICI Bank and Larsen & Toubro were among the biggest drags on the benchmark index.

Broader market indices also came under selling pressure. The Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 were trading sharply lower, with the Nifty Smallcap 100 falling nearly 1 per cent on Tuesday.
