Apollo Micro Systems Ltd has announced the successful handing over of its indigenously developed Safety & Detonation Device (SDD) to the Indian Navy, marking a significant milestone in India's Defence indigenisation efforts under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The handover ceremony was held in the presence of Rear Admiral Rupak Barua, VSM, Director General of Naval Inspection (DGNAI), Indian Navy, senior naval officers, and the company's leadership team.
The Safety & Detonation Device is a highly critical subsystem used in modern naval munitions. It ensures that weapons remain completely safe during storage, transportation, handling and launch, while allowing detonation only after all prescribed operational conditions are fulfilled. Designed to operate reliably in harsh maritime environments, the device must withstand mechanical shock, vibration, humidity, salt fog and severe electromagnetic conditions, making it one of the most demanding defence technologies.
Prior to this indigenous development, the Indian Navy depended on imported Safety & Detonation Devices. According to the company, local development of the system is expected to significantly reduce procurement costs while enhancing India's self-Reliance in strategic defence technologies. The successful completion of the project also demonstrates the capability of Indian industry to deliver one of the most safety-critical elements of a weapon system.
Apollo Micro Systems said the SDD has completed a comprehensive design, development, qualification and validation process. The system has been developed in accordance with globally accepted fuze safety and arming principles and incorporates independent redundant safety interlocks along with an out-of-line safety architecture.
The company stated that the device underwent extensive environmental qualification covering mechanical shock, vibration, extreme temperatures, humidity and marine environmental stress screening. It also completed electromagnetic compatibility and interference testing for shipborne and underwater weapon applications, followed by functional, endurance and safety-margin testing. The system was subsequently subjected to joint evaluation and acceptance trials with the Indian Navy before being formally handed over.
Apollo Micro Systems highlighted that the SDD has 100 per cent indigenous content and can be applied across a variety of weapons and missile programmes. Since the technology was previously imported, the company believes the indigenous solution offers significant cost reduction opportunities while creating prospects for maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services as well as new weapon and missile programmes.
The company expects this successful indigenisation programme to generate a healthy pipeline of production orders and follow-on programmes as the Indian Navy and other defence users progressively adopt indigenous safety and arming technologies across their weapon inventories. Apollo Micro Systems said it has the design expertise, manufacturing infrastructure and quality systems required to support large-scale production and lifecycle sustenance of the SDD and its future variants.
Commenting on the achievement, Managing Director Baddam Karunakar Reddy said the Safety & Detonation Device represents an area where engineering leaves no room for error. He added that handing over the fully indigenous and proven system to the Indian Navy is a proud milestone for the company and reflects the trust placed in it by the Navy.
Apollo Micro Systems is engaged in the design, development and manufacture of advanced electronic, electro-mechanical and engineering systems for India's armed forces. The company holds a valid Defence Industrial Licence, is certified to AS9100 Rev D Aerospace quality standards and has a 41-year track record of supplying mission-critical systems to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Armed Forces.
