Investment View and Recommendation

In its June 1, 2026 result update, ICICI Securities retained its HOLD recommendation on Ashok Leyland with a target price of Rs 170, compared with the current market price of Rs 155.

The broker sees a favourable long-term growth narrative supported by Ashok Leyland’s presence in medium and heavy commercial vehicles, export momentum, progress in electric vehicles and diversification into defence, aftermarket and financial-services businesses. However, near-term growth could be moderated by commodity inflation, disruption to commercial vehicle demand following diesel price hikes and geopolitical disruptions.

Q4FY26 Financial Performance

Ashok Leyland is a domestic pure-play commercial vehicle manufacturer. Its FY26 market share was 18.7 per cent, broadly flat year on year. The FY26 product mix comprised LCV goods at 35 per cent, trucks at 50 per cent and buses at 15 per cent.

Standalone Q4FY26 metric Performance Year-on-year change
Operating income Rs 14,160 crore Up 18.9 per cent
Volumes About 69,000 units Up 17 per cent
EBITDA Rs 2,066 crore Up 15.3 per cent
EBITDA margin 14.6 per cent Down 46 basis points
Reported PAT Rs 1,405 crore Up 12.8 per cent
Average selling price Rs 20.4 lakh per unit Up 1.3 per cent

Market-Share Gains and Domestic Demand

The broker highlighted continuing market-share gains. Ashok Leyland held about 30 per cent market share in MHCVs during Q4FY26 and retained bus leadership with approximately 34 per cent share.

Domestic LCV volumes increased 23 per cent year on year, while Vahan market share improved by 90 basis points year on year to 12.8 per cent. Management said FY26 was the company’s highest-ever annual LCV-volume year. It expects recently launched high-horsepower trucks and tippers to contribute meaningfully to market-share gains from Q2FY27.

Management also indicated that domestic commercial vehicle demand remained healthy in April and May. Tippers, mining and construction haulage were resilient, while mining and infrastructure applications are expected to outperform in FY27, particularly in eastern and central India.

Building Wealth Through Established Businesses

Large-cap companies often form the foundation of a resilient portfolio. DSIJ's Large Rhino focuses on fundamentally strong businesses selected through detailed research for long-term investors.

Cost Inflation and Pricing Actions

Management identified rising steel, aluminium, copper and rubber costs as a key FY27 challenge. It protected Q4 gross margins through calibrated price increases, sourcing efficiencies, value engineering and cost control.

A roughly 1 per cent price increase introduced in January continued through Q4. A further 1-1.5 per cent price increase was implemented from April 2026.

Growth Businesses and Strategic Initiatives

Switch Mobility and Electric Vehicles

Switch Mobility India achieved PAT above Rs 100 crore in FY26, reducing concerns over EV-related cash burn. Switch delivered more than 1,530 electric buses and around 1,600 electric LCVs during FY26, backed by an order book of 1,600 vehicles. Ashok Leyland also commenced a battery-pack manufacturing facility near Chennai.

Defence, Aftermarket and Exports

Defence revenue grew more than 20 per cent year on year. The overall defence business exceeded Rs 1,200 crore, with executable orders above Rs 1,500 crore.

FY26 aftermarket spares revenue was about Rs 3,800 crore. Export revenue exceeded Rs 3,200 crore despite logistics disruption in Q4.

Capital Expenditure

FY26 capex was around Rs 1,050 crore. Management guided for FY27 capex of Rs 750-1,000 crore, focused on future technologies, EVs, alternate powertrains and product development.

Earnings Outlook and Valuation

ICICI Securities forecasts about 8 per cent volume CAGR over FY26P-FY28E and EBITDA margins in the 11-13 per cent range.

FY28E estimate Amount
Sales Rs 52,124 crore
EBITDA Rs 6,628 crore
PAT Rs 4,524 crore

The Rs 170 target price is based on a sum-of-the-parts valuation. The core business is valued at 12 times FY28E EV/EBITDA, resulting in a value of Rs 150 per share. Strategic long-term investments contribute Rs 20 per share and are valued at 2 times book value after applying a 20 per cent holding-company discount.

Key Risks

  • Near-term commercial vehicle growth could be affected by commodity inflation, diesel-price-hike-related demand disruption and geopolitical disruptions.
  • Higher steel, aluminium, copper and rubber costs could moderate margins despite pricing actions and cost-control measures.
  • The broker also identifies a higher-than-expected recovery in commercial vehicle volumes as a key risk to its HOLD view and target-price assumptions.
