Investment View and Recommendation

In its July 22, 2026 result update on Orient Electric, Anand Rathi Research maintained its BUY recommendation following a stronger-than-expected Q1 FY27. The broker believes growth momentum can sustain through fan market-share gains, premiumisation, the DTM strategy, pricing actions, continued strength in Lighting and Switchgear (L&S), and a recovery in B2C Lighting.

Anand Rathi also cites Orient Electric's strong brand equity, refreshed leadership, improved channel execution, low capex intensity, stable working-capital cycle and healthy shareholder payouts as support for its investment thesis.

Q1 FY27 Financial Performance

Orient Electric reported Q1 FY27 revenue of Rs9,498 million, up 23.5 per cent year on year and 8.3 per cent above Anand Rathi's estimate. Growth was led by a 25.4 per cent increase in L&S and 22.7 per cent growth in the ECD division.

Metric Q1 FY27 Year-on-year change Vs. Anand Rathi estimate
Revenue Rs9,498 million +23.5% +8.3%
EBITDA Rs666 million +44.5% +16.9%
EBITDA margin 7.0% +102 basis points
Adjusted PAT Rs345 million +96.7% +36.1%

EBITDA growth benefited from operating leverage and tighter selling, general and administrative costs, which more than offset raw-material pressure. Reported profit included an exceptional loss of Rs39.6 million related to capital-asset write-downs during the consolidation of Noida manufacturing facilities.

Demand, Margins and Management Outlook

Management described demand as positive, supported by above-normal temperatures, fan share gains and healthy momentum across categories. Gross margin fell 277 basis points year on year to 29.8 per cent owing to copper and aluminium inflation, higher employee costs, and fuel and freight inflation. Management continues to target a 32-34 per cent gross margin under normal commodity conditions.

Management reiterated its guidance for a double-digit EBITDA margin and a healthy double-digit revenue CAGR, supported by premiumisation, pricing discipline, operating leverage and Project Sanchay. The cost programme generated approximately Rs100 million of savings in Q1 FY27, and management remains confident of surpassing Rs50,000 million of revenue over the medium term.

Segment Performance and Operating Initiatives

Electrical Consumer Durables

In ECD, fan growth was broad based across DTM and multi-brand channels. BLDC fan revenue grew 36 per cent year on year and represented approximately 27-30 per cent of domestic ceiling-fan revenue. Premium products accounted for about 36 per cent of domestic fan sales, while new launches contributed around 30 per cent of fan revenue.

Appliances delivered high double-digit growth, led by water heaters and garment care, and the DTM network added around 3,600 retailers.

Lighting and Switchgear

In L&S, consumer lighting posted high double-digit growth, while professional lighting grew at a high single-digit pace. Premium luminaires reached a 60 per cent mix. Wires grew more than two times year on year, while switchgears and switches recorded double-digit growth. A new 6kA MCB is planned for Q2 FY27.

Lighting margin declined around 240 basis points year on year due to delayed pass-through of higher raw-material costs.

Earnings Estimates and Valuation

After Q1 FY27, Anand Rathi raised its FY27E and FY28E revenue estimates by 4.6 per cent and 2.9 per cent, respectively, and increased adjusted PAT estimates by 4.7 per cent and 3.5 per cent. It reduced EBITDA-margin estimates by 19 basis points for FY27E and 4 basis points for FY28E to reflect raw-material-cost volatility.

Forecast metric FY26-28E CAGR / FY28E outlook
Revenue CAGR 10.7%
EBITDA CAGR 21.7%
Adjusted PAT CAGR 28.1%
EBITDA margin 8.3%
RoCE 31.2%

The broker's target price of Rs250 is based on 30 times FY28E EPS, in line with small domestic appliance peers.

Key Risks

  • Sharper competition in premium products could constrain market-share gains and margin expansion.
  • Persistent raw-material-cost inflation could pressure margins and limit the pace of earnings growth.
