The newly commissioned facility has an annual production capacity of 30,000 tonnes and is designed to cater to growing demand from industries including wires and cables, polymer insulators, thermal insulation and electric vehicles. The facility is also designed for phased expansion to 60,000 tonnes per annum in line with the growth of the domestic market.

Supports Fire-Safety Applications

PPT ATH is a halogen-free flame-retardant material used in applications such as Halogen-Free Flame Retardant cables, polymer insulators, thermal insulation, composites and paints. In cable applications, the material helps suppress flame propagation and smoke generation without releasing halogen acid gases, supporting safer electrical and infrastructure systems.

The company noted that demand for such materials is increasing amid stricter fire-safety standards, rising adoption of electric vehicles and infrastructure, and the shift towards sustainable and high-performance materials. The Bureau of Indian Standards has also introduced IS 17048:2018 for HFFR cables, supporting wider adoption across infrastructure, electrical and mobility applications.

100 per cent Renewable Energy-Powered Facility

The Belagavi facility is powered entirely by renewable energy sourced from biomass, Solar and wind. According to the company, this makes the facility the world’s only specialty alumina plant to operate entirely on renewable energy. The company's Belagavi refinery reported a GHG intensity of 0.44 tCO2e per tonne of alumina on a YTD FY26 basis.

Hindalco has developed the facility through in-house technology and R&D, incorporating automated controls and an integrated manufacturing ecosystem to maintain feedstock quality and product consistency.

Satish Pai, Managing Director of Hindalco Industries, said the commissioning of the Superfine precipitated hydrate plant will strengthen the company's leadership position and expand its high-value specialty alumina portfolio. He added that the investment reflects the company's focus on moving up the value chain and delivering advanced solutions for customers in India and global markets.
