Markets May Make Merry Wishing Investors Merry Christmas

Asian shares were higher in early Asian trade except China on Thursday, following a positive lead from Wall Street and a recovery in crude oil prices. Indian market may open in green on a last day of the week following other Asian market.

Indian benchmark indices surged over one per cent on Wednesday, driven by rally in oil & gas and metal shares. Indian markets bounced back after a weak trade on Tuesday. On colourful Christmas eve, Dalal Street partied hard with two stellar healthcare IPO listings. Dr Lal PathLabs surged 54% on debut; stock at Rs 824 against its issue price of Rs 550 and Alkem Laboratories surged 31.5% at Rs 1381.45 against its issue price of Rs 1050. The Sensex was up 259.65 points or 1% at 25850.30 and the Nifty gained 79.85 points or 1% at 7865.95. Broader markets underperformed the benchmarks during the day as the BSE mid-cap and small-cap indices gained 0.30% and 0.43% respectively.

U.S. stocks closed higher for a third straight session on Wednesday led by a fired up in energy stocks on a gain in oil prices. The Dow rose 185.34 points, or 1.1%, to 17602.61. The S&P 500 gained 25.32 points, or 1.2%, to 2064.29. The Nasdaq Composite advanced 44.82 points, or 0.9%, to 5045.93.

U.S. oil prices rose 3.8% to USD 37.50 a barrel after government data showed an unexpected decline in U.S. stockpiles. Brent crude gained USD 1.25, or 3.5%, to USD 37.36 a barrel on ICE Futures Europe, ending a five-session losing streak.

European stocks finished on higher note on Wednesday lifted by gains in the mining and energy sector on the back of stronger copper prices and recovery in oil prices. Britain's FTSE 100 index tacked on 2.6% to 6,241, while Germany's DAX climbed 2.28% to 10,727. France's CAC 40 rose 2.34% to 4,675.

SGX Nifty 50 index future for December Series traded up 20.5 points at 7,887. Indian market may open in green on a last day of the week following other Asian market.
