These sectors outperformed BSE Sensex during the first quarter of 2016

BSE Sensex on Wednesday touched the levels it was trading in the beginning of the year i.e in the month of January signalling a strong recovery in the markets.

BSE Sensex on Wednesday touched the levels it was trading in the beginning of the year i.e in the month of January signalling a strong recovery in the markets. Markets have been trading in negative zone since the beginning of the year. The current recovery is not before the markets went down by almost 12 per cent from its January highs to touch 22951 levels. The sharp recovery from the lows reflects almost 13 percent gain in  Sensex levels in not more than two months.
 
It is interesting to see which sectors outperformed BSE Sensex during this volatile period-BSE Auto, BSE Metal and BSE Information Technology are the only sectors which outperformed the Sensex and are trading in positive zone for the current year on YTD basis. While BSE Sensex, if we take the closing levels as on April 13, is down by 2 percent from the January 1 levels, BSE Auto, BSE Metal & BSE Information Technology are up by almost 0.40 percent. 2.82 percent and 2.36 percent respectively. Hindalco and Tata Steel have contributed handsomely to the gains in BSE Metal Index.
 
With a negative return of almost 10 percent on YTD basis the PSU sector Index – BSE PSU is the worst performer followed by healthcare sector and telecom sector as reflected by BSE healthcare and BSE telecom index.
