Man who dreamt of 'good times,' faces his worst 'troubled times'

PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act) Court has declared Vijay Mallya as a ‘Proclaimed Offender’ under section 82. Vijay Mallya now will have to appear before the PMLA court within 30 days and if he fails to come, the court may attach his properties worth Rs 1400 crores; and Interpol will be asked to go ahead with his arrest.

Liquor baron has been declared a ‘Proclaimed Offender’ in the alleged case of money laundering and in the bank loan fraud case registered against him. A person is termed as a ‘Proclaimed Offender’ if a arrest warrant is issued against him and the person is absconding or is concealing himself so that the arrest warrant cannot be executed.

In March 2016, a consortium of banks had approached the Supreme Court of India to stop Mallya from going abroad due to the pending money owed by his company. On March 13, 2016 a court in Hyderabad issued a non-bailable warrant for Mallya's arrest.

Vijay Mallya (born 18 December 1955) is an Indian businessman and politician.  He is the ex-chairman of United Spirits Ltd., the largest spirits company in India and is the ex - chairman of UB Group, an Indian conglomerate with interests in beverage alcohol, aviation infrastructure, real estate and fertilisers among others. Vijay Mallya had left India on March 2 using his diplomatic passport and is believed to be in the UK.
