Indian market began the New Year on positive note following strong global cues. The metal stocks led the rally on the news of price hike by few steel companies. The asian markets boosted the market sentiments and the Indian markets opened in the green the first trading day of the year 2011. In accordance with the global markets, the European markets too had a positive start for the year. CAC, DAX opened 1 per cent higher while FTSE remained close.Among the BSE sectoral indices, Metal index gained 2 per cent followed by Consumer Durables. PSU, Bankex, Power and Auto indices were up 0.5 per cent each. The benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty were closed at 20,509 and 6,157 up by 0.25 and 0.38 per cent respectively. The market breadth was positive with 878 advances against 164 declines.
