Infosys has laid off around 8,000-9,000 employees in the past one year due to automation of low-end jobs. The company is training those employees on more advanced projects.
The company in every quarter is releasing about 2,000 people and even training them in special courses which will help them in new assignments. Infosys has trained about 490 people in the first batch of machine learning and the use of artificial intelligence (AI). Machine learning and AI previously required expensive computing machines, but lately, its costs have come down.
The number of people any company hires is likely to come down, as automation is set to increase in future. Infosys added 5,700 people in the first nine months of this fiscal, compared to about 17,000 in the same period last year.
The total employee strength of Infosys declined in December quarter which is a rare occurrence for the India's second-largest IT service company.
