Don't believe in rumours, govt is in no mood to come up with Rs 1000 notes

Contrary to the ongoing speculations in social media and also certain sections of media (not DSIJ), on Wednesday, Economic Affairs Secretary, Shaktikanta Das clarified that the government is not in a mood to print any Rs 1000 notes.

Contrary to the ongoing speculations in social media and also certain sections of media (not DSIJ), on Wednesday, Economic Affairs Secretary, Shaktikanta Das clarified that the government is not in a mood to print any Rs 1000 notes. Taking the help of Twitter, Das refuted to all the ongoing rumours tweeting, "No plans to introduce Rs 1000 notes. Focus is on production and supply of Rs 500 and lower denomination notes."

It may be recalled here that in a major development on November 8, country's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi had announced his government's decision to scrap Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes.

In yet another tweet, Das requested his fellow countrymen to withdraw cash in a 'self-controlled' manner by saying, "Complaints of cash out in ATMs being addressed.Request everyone to draw the cash they actually require. Overdrawal by some deprives others." While the metros in India these days are facing less cash shortage, rural India is still coping up with acute cash shortage in certain regions. Banks are still discouraging customers to withdraw large amount of cash even in cases of someone trying to withdraw cash within the permissible limit. Meanwhile though there are plenty of Rs 2000 notes presently in circulation, at least in urban India, complaints of not being able to obtain smaller changes are increasing as not enough number of Rs 100 notes are still in circulation.

Even there is crisis of Rs 500 notes across the length and breadth of the country. While Das has assured that the issue of some ATMs going dry being addressed, his request to people on Wednesday shows that the cash shortage problem is yet far away from being addressed by the government.
