A total of 43 airports are likely to get flights under regional air connectivity scheme of the Government, as per the Ministry of Aviation. Spicejet has received six unserved airports under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS). Besides, 13 airports in tier II and tier III cities which did not have many flights in a week will see more flights.
Eleven bidders had submitted 45 initial proposals covering more than 200 RCS routes under the Udan scheme, which seeks to encourage common people to fly.
The Aviation Ministry has selected five regional airlines for RCS. Air Deccan, Air Odisha, Alliance Air, SpiceJet and Turbo Megha have emerged winners in the first round of bidding under RCS. As per the government estimate, the total viability gap funding it will have to pay to the airlines, is to the tune of Rs 205 crore for RCS.
The government has plans to revive 15 airports each in FY18 and FY19, with 20 airports scheduled to be reworked in FY20. The second phase of the RCS is expected to begin in six months.
