US stocks close flat amidst geopolitical tensions

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained nearly 10 points, even as Caterpillar contributed the most to the index gains. The S&P 500 closed higher by 0.1 per cent even as energy stocks rose more than 0.75 per cent, taking the lead on a flattish day. The Nasdaq composite gained nearly 0.1 per cent.

Crude oil rose 1.61 per cent and settled at USD 53.08 per barrel, after commodity markets discounted the shutdown of Libya’s largest oilfield. The rise in crude oil prices lifted the sentiment for energy stocks. In one month, the oil prices rose nearly 9 per cent.

The markets traded in red in the first half, and recovered in the second half of the session.
