Sensex, Nifty snap 4-day rally; Nifty closes at 9400

After a dream run for four consecutive sessions, markets decided to take a breather on Friday, with major benchmark indices closing in the red. Nifty closed at 9400, down by 21 points, while Sensex closed at 30188, down by 62 points.

The broader markets underperformed the major benchmark indices with the BSE Mid-cap index closing at 14854, down by 102 points while the BSE Small-cap index closing at 15528, down by 124 points.

There were 522 advances and 1118 declines, while 316 stocks remained unchanged on the NSE reflecting strong negative bias in today's trade.

There were around 62 stocks on the NSE which touched their fresh 52-week highs.

Glenmark Pharma managed to pull down the Nifty Pharma index. The stock touched its intra-day low of Rs 751.10, down by nearly 17 per cent, which is also its biggest intra-day fall in the past seven years. The stock had tanked nearly 17.4 per cent on an intra-day basis on August 19, 2009.

Yes Bank tumbled more than 6 per cent in today's trade after reports emerged of the bank reporting lower non-performing assets than adjudged by the Reserve Bank of India. In fact, Yes Bank was the top Nifty loser.

BSE Energy index slipped by 0.05 per cent, BSE FMCG index closed down by 0.46 per cent, BSE Finance fell 0.89 per cent, BSE healthcare declined 0.66 per cent, BSE Telecom slid 0.26 per cent, BSE Bankex was down by 0.89 per cent and BSE Consumer Durables fell by 0.98 per cent.

The sectoral indices that gained are BSE IT index that closed up by 1.16 per cent and BSE Auto index that gained 0.12 per cent along with BSE Realty index that increased 0.81 per cent.
