The Nifty Smallcap 100 index has significantly underperformed the Nifty 50, as reflected in the month-to-date (MTD) performance chart below. The sustained selling pressure has pushed the Smallcap 100 index to a fresh four-month low, highlighting the weakness in the broader market.

From a technical perspective, the Nifty Smallcap 100 index is trading below its 20-day, 50-day and 100-day moving averages (DMAs) and is now approaching its crucial 200-DMA support level.

Adding to the bearish outlook, the index has witnessed a breakdown from a Head and Shoulders pattern on the daily chart. This is a bearish reversal pattern that typically signals a potential shift from an uptrend to a downtrend. On Wednesday, October 21, 2026, the index breached the neckline of the pattern, indicating an increase in selling pressure. However, a decisive daily close below the neckline would provide stronger confirmation of the breakdown.

Despite the bearish technical development, the index is approaching an important support zone formed by its 200-DMA and a previous gap-up area. The opening upside gap formed on June 15, 2026, extends from 18,212.55 to 18,368, while the 200-DMA is positioned at 18,184. These levels collectively form a crucial support region, making the 18,184–18,368 zone an important area to monitor in the coming sessions.
