Tata Motors Announces its May 2017 Sales Data

Tata Motors’ Small Cargo Vehicles sold 10,572 units in May 2017, a growth of 10% when compared to 9,645 units sold in May 2016. On the SCV and pick-up segments, there is a strong sales recovery with full availability of BS4 products and good market response to new variants like Xenon Yodha and Ace Mega.

Total sales of Tata Motors, passenger and commercial (including exports) in May 2017 was at 38,361 vehicles, a decline of 4% when compares to 40,123 vehicles sold in May 2016.

The domestic sales of Tata Motors for May 2017 was at 34,461 units, lower by 3%, when opposed to 35,695 units in May 2016.

Tata Motors passenger vehicles segment recorded sales of 10,855 units in May 2017 in the domestic market, which meant a growth of 27% over May 2016. This growth was witnessed due to the continued strong demand for the Tata Tiago, the Tata Tigor and the Tata Hexa.

The overall commercial vehicles segment did not perform as well as the passenger vehicles segment in May 2017, as only 23,606 units were sold, a drop of 13% compared to May 2016. As a result, the market continues to remain weak and the demand is not picking up. Although, signs of retails of BS4 vehicles are there, still it has been slow.

The sale in M&HCV segment saw a significant decline due to severe global supply constraints of Fuel Injection Pumps for BS4 engines., Compared to 2,697 units sold last year in May, ILCV trucks were at 2,368 units in May 2017, a decline of 12% compared to May 2016. Main reason for this decline was the late supply of Fuel Injector Systems. These issues are expected to be resolved on short notice with full capacity available as of July 2017.

Overall sales of Tata Motors’ M&HCV trucks' were at 6,522 nos. in May 2017, a decline of 40%, over a very strong May 2016 base.

April and May sales have been affected due to retail drop of SCV in Sri Lanka after steep increase in import tariffs in late 2016, as well as fall of demand in Nepal because of the build up to their elections.
