Nifty, Sensex lose ground as banking and IT stocks drag

Bharti Airtel was the top Sensex gainer , up by 1.61 per cent followed by ONGC which gained 1.23 per cent. Heromotors inched up 0.97 per cent on Tuesday even as Tata Steel gained 0.60 per cent.

SBI was the top Sensex loser, closing lower by 3.27 per cent. Axis Bank shed 2.34 per cent, while Infosys was down by 1.80 per cent, Asian Paints closed 1.73 per cent down and Bajaj Auto slipped lower by 1.61 per cent.
 
The IT bellwether Infosys and banking heavyweights SBI, ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank together contributed 64 per cent to Sensex loss.
 
NSE Nifty closed at its one month low, but managed to hold its 9500 level, closing lower for the fifth straight session, whereas Sensex closed below 31,000-mark for the first time since May 25. Nifty closed at the 9511 level, lower by 63 points or 0.66%, whereas Sensex closed at 30,958 level, lower by 179 points or 0.58%.
  
BSE Mid-cap index closed down by 0.79% at 14,468, whereas BSE Small-cap closed down by 1.57% at 15,141. 
 
IOC was the top Nifty gainer, whereas Bank of Baroda was the top Nifty loser. 
 
Tejas Networks Ltd got listed on the BSE at Rs 257, which is its issue price.. The stock closed at Rs 262.60, higher by 2.18%.
