Putting to rest rumours about a ban on currency notes of Rs 2,000, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has said that the government is not considering any such move. Meanwhile, he added that the Reserve Bank of India will decide on the timing of issuing the new Rs 200 note.
The introduction of Rs 200 note will ease the pressure on lower denomination currency. “It would be appropriate for the RBI to announce the dates and matters related to the note printing,” Jaitley said. Following the demonetisation of old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes on November 9 last year, the RBI had introduced Rs 2,000 notes and new Rs 500 notes with additional security features.
