In a startling revelation, AMFI data showed that individual investors hold 84 per cent of the total equity assets as on September 2017.
According to Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) data of the total Rs. 5.88 lakh crore equity assets, individual investors hold Rs. 4.93 lakh crore of equity AUM. The total value of assets held by individual investors in mutual funds increased from Rs. 7.49 lakh crore in September 2016 to Rs. 10.40 lakh crore in September 2017, showcasing an increase of 39 per cent . This shows that, in spite of the volatility in the equity markets, the individual investors have continued to pour in their money into the equity funds.
Also, the assets managed by the Indian mutual fund industry have grown from Rs. 16.51 trillion in September 2016 to Rs. 21.45 trillion in September 2017, showing a 30 per cent rise.
The data further indicates that the individual investors primarily hold equity-oriented schemes while the institutional investors hold liquid and debt-oriented schemes, since 64 per cent of individual investors’ assets are held in equity-oriented schemes whereas, 84 per cent of institutional investors’ assets are held in liquid and debt oriented schemes.
