Markets witness volatile trading day, close in the red

The Indian markets had a volatile trading day. In the noon, the markets recovered from their day’s low, and were in the green zone for a few minutes. However, they finally closed the day in the red.

Among the sectors, Power and Capital Goods continued trading higher and closed in the green, while Metals and Consumer Durables had a weak day, dragging the market southwards.

The European markets are trading in the positive territory, after reports that the Euro leaders are scheduled to once again take a look at the debt crisis this week. FTSE, CAC and DAX all are trading higher in the range of 0.4%-1%.

Asian markets also closed the day with mixed results. While the Nikkei and Hang Seng in the green, Shanghai closed the day in the red, down more than 1% on the back of concerns that the Chinese economy is slowing down.

Dow Jones Futures is currently trading 95 points or 0.79% up at 12095, indicating a positive sentiment in the US markets.

Among the Sensex stocks, metals scrips continued their morning losses, and closed the day in the red. Tata Steel, Sterlite Industries and Jindal Steel were all down more than 1%. Other major losers include Sun Pharma, ITC, Hero MotoCorp, Bajaj Auto, etc. Leading private sector bank stocks, ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank also closed in the red zone.

On the other hand, Jaiprakash Associates was the leading index gainer, up 2.53% at Rs 69. NTPC and BHEL also closed their trading higher more than 2%. Other stocks like Bharti Airtel, Infosys, Tata Motors, L&T, etc. closed marginally in the green zone today.

HT Media closed 0.45% higher at Rs 124.05, after the news came in that company has entered into JV with Apollo Global to provide educational services in India.

Stone India closed 9.81% higher at Rs 29.10, on the back of news that company has signed an MoU with 2 companies for the manufacture and supply of light weight pantographs.

Tilaknagar Industries surged 13.29% to Rs 34.95, after the company clarified that it is in talks with international liquor majors as a part of its planned expansion in the branded spirits market, and that there is a possibility of forming a separate JV in this regard.

The market breadth, which indicates the overall health of the market, was positive. Out of the total of 3166 stocks traded on the BSE, 1524 advanced, 1518 declined and 124 stocks remained unchanged.
