Markets recover by a fraction, but remain in the negative

Indian markets witnessed another volatile day, opening 50 points down and continuing to trade in the negative. The BSE Sensex closed at 15379.34, down by 112 points, while the 50-share Nifty closed at 4613.1, down by 38 points.

Indian markets witnessed another volatile day, opening 50 points down and continuing to trade in the negative. In the later afternoon session, the markets recovered by a tiny percentage, but this was not enough to turn the morning losses into profits. By the end of the day, the BSE Sensex closed at 15379.34, down by 112 points, while the 50-share Nifty closed at 4613.1, down by 38 points.

Earlier, the Asian markets ended the day on a negative note. North Korean leader Kim Jong Il's death this morning raised concerns over stability in that part of the world. Korean stocks fell after the death of the leader.

European markets, however, are showing some recovery in trades at this time. The FTSE has gained by 0.36%, while CAC and DAX are also seen trading in the green.

Dow Jones Futures is currently trading 52 points or 0.44% up at 11830, indicating a positive sentiment in the US markets.

On the domestic front, the Auto, Oil & Gas and FMCG sectors gained marginally by the end of the day, while CG ended the day in the negative. Bankex, PSU, Power and Realty were also down between 1.5%-3%.

8 out of the 30 Sensex stocks ended up in gains. Tata Motors gained by 4.44% by the end of the day. The financial shares of Coal India, RIL, Hindustan Unilever, ITC, Sterlite Industries, Cipla and Bharti Airtel also gained marginally.

L&T continued its negative run for the entire day. The shares of BHEL, Jindal Steel and DLF were seen down by over 3% each.

In the larger market, a total 71 shares fell by over 10%. Among other stocks, the shares of Bata India declined by 11% while those of Wockhardt also closed with negative 9.96% returns. Both Gujarat Terce and Archana Soft, however, gained by over 19%.

Among the major announcements, Era Infra has secured a contract worth Rs 1025 cr from NHAI. DQ Entertainment has announced the sale of broadcasting rights for Chaplin & Co. to Cartoon Network Asia. TCS is setting up a large software development campus in Nagpur, and has laid the foundation for the same. Godrej Properties has announced a residential project in Pune and Shriram EPC has won an order worth Rs 488 cr from NMDC.

The overall market breadth remained negative today. Out of a total of 3213 stocks traded on the BSE, 2286 stocks declined, 820 stocks advanced and 107 stocks remained unchanged.
