Market end on a volatile note

After opening the day on a weak note, Indian stock markets remained volatile throughout the day and finally ended in the red zone. Both the indices closed with a loss of 0.60 per cent.
All the sectoral indices also closed the day in red with Realty, Metals & Bankex down more than a per cent. Other indices like FMCG, Capital goods and Consumer Durables were marginally in the red.

Asian markets also closed in the negative zone with Shanghai and Nikkei down 1.09 and 0.46 per cent respectively. On the other hand, European markets are trading in the green with DAX and CAC up more than 0.50 per cent each. This is on the back of US home prices falling at a slower rate and increasing consumer confidence in the economy.

In the Sensex stocks, DLF was the biggest losers with a loss of 2.70 per cent at Rs 191.25. Stocks like Cipla, Coal India, Tata Motors, NTPC were also down more than 2 per cent each. The metals pack also lost some ground with Sterlite Industries, Hindalco, Tata Steel down, in the range of 1 to 2 per cent. Other stocks like Wipro, Bharti Airtel, ICICI Bank and Sun Pharma were also marginally down.
On the other hand, Tata Power was the leading Sensex gainer with a gain of 1.92 per cent at Rs 92.25. Auto major Bajaj Auto and Mahindra and Mahindra closed 1.19% and 0.21 per cent higher. Other stocks like HDFC, Jindal Steel, L&T, ITC also closed the day in the green.

Multiplex shares rose on the back of good box office collections from Don 2. Fame India surged 19.97 per cent to Rs 40.85.
Havells India suffered some profit booking after yesterday’s rally and closed with a loss of 1.37 per cent to Rs 392.50.
JVL Agro Industries gained 3 per cent in capacity expansion news.

The market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was negative. Out of 3145 stocks traded, 1729 stocks declined while1284 advanced. A total of 132 stocks remained unchanged.
In conclusion, we at DSIJ expect the markets to remain volatile as investors are wary of investing in markets that fail to provide any concrete direction. We advise our readers to stay cautious.
