Markets end the day in gains

After having a firm positive session throughout the day, the Indian markets ended with good gains. The Sensex and Nifty were up by 1% each.

After having a firm positive session throughout the day, the Indian markets ended with good gains. Both the indices were up by 1%. Positive global cues lifted the sentiments among investors today. The global markets also rallied today on back of the IMF's announcement that it will raise an additional US$ 500 billion to help the Euro zone countries that are struggling with huge debt burdens.

Other Asian markets also closed the day positive, with the Nikkei closing up by 1.04%, while the Hang Seng and Shanghai ended with gains of 1.30% and 1.31% respectively.

The European markets opened on a positive note today, hoping for a favourable outcome from the resumed talks with the creditors.

Dow Jones Futures is currently trading 4 points or 0.03% down at 12500, indicating a negative sentiment in the US markets.

Back home, Realty, Metals, Power and Bankex continue to lead the BSE sectoral indices with gains of 3.44%, 2.76%, 2.55% and 1.74% respectively. All the other indices except IT and Teck are up between 1.58%-0.03%. IT and Teck are both down by 0.3%.

Of the Sensex shares, Coal India, DLF, Hindalco, NTPC, Sterlite, Sun Pharma and Tata Power are leading with gains between 3.23%-6.77%. Hindalco topped the charts today and ended with gains of 6.7%. Other major gainers including GAIL, HDFC, Hero MotoCorp, Jindal Steel, Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors have ended with gains between 1%-2.27%. Bharti Airtel, BHEL, Infosys and M&M were among the major losers, closing down between 1%-2.64% each.

The market breadth, which indicates the overall health of the market, was positive. On the BSE, 1896 shares rose, 1175 shares fell and 183 shares remained unchanged.
