Day Trades End Flat

The Indian markets closed on a very flat note today. While the Sensex closed the day marginally lower, Nifty closed almost at yesterday's level though marginally in the green.

The Indian markets closed on a very flat note today. While the Sensex closed the day marginally lower, Nifty closed almost at yesterday's level though marginally in the green. It seems that the market is in consolidation mode after witnessing deep cuts in the past three to four trading sessions.

Among the sectoral indices, Realty was the worst performer, closing down 3%. Others like Oil & Gas, Metals, Capital Goods, etc. also closed in the negatives. On the flip side, the Auto, Consumer Durables and Healthcare indices ended the trading day higher in the green zone.

The peer Asian markets closed the day in the negative territory. Major indices like the Hang Seng, Nikkei and Shanghai closed down in the range of 0.1%-0.4%. According to a Bloomberg report, Chinese stocks fell (trading volumes on the benchmark index plunged to the lowest level in almost a year) after foreign direct investment in the country dropped. Further, reports suggest that China may refrain from cutting the lenders’ reserve requirements for the rest of the year after the economic slowdown subsided and the central bank increased its use of a separate tool to adjust funds in the financial system.

The European markets are currently trading weak, with the FTSE, CAC and DAX lower between 0.1%-0.6%. According to a Bloomberg report, European stocks feel, as Moody’s Investors Service downgraded France and Euro-zone finance ministers prepared to discuss Greece’s finances.

Dow Jones Futures is currently trading 90 points or 0.71% up at 12715, indicating a positive sentiment in the US markets.


Back home, Hindalco was the worst perfomer as the stock closed 1.86% lower at Rs 105.8 per share. Index heavyweights like Infosys, SBI, Bajaj Auto and RIL closed lower by more than 1%. Steel stocks like Jindal Steel and Tata Steel also dropped by 0.85% and 0.78% respectively. Other stocks like NTPC, Bharti Airtel, Dr Reddy's Labs, BHEL, etc. closed in the negatives.

On the other hand, M&M was the leading index gainer, up by 3.25% at Rs 938.35 per share. HDFC gained 2.02% to Rs 780.60 per share. Private banking players HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank closed higher by 0.67% and 0.11% respectively. Sun Pharma, Maruti Suzuki, HUL etc. too ended the day positive.

The market breadth, which indicates the overall health of the market, was negative for the day. Out of the 2976 stocks traded on the BSE, 1802 declined, 1051 advanced and 123 remained unchanged.
