Markets Hold Morning Gains

The Indian markets opened their first trades of the day higher and are currently holding their initial gains. Currently, the Sensex and Nifty have gained 0.5% and 0.44% respectively.

The Indian markets opened their first trades of the day higher and are currently holding their initial gains. Currently, both the frontline indices, viz. Sensex and Nifty have gained 0.5% and 0.44% respectively.

All the sectoral indices are trading higher except for Capital Goods, which is marginally in the red. Auto, Metals, Consumer Durables and Oil & Gas are all up over 1%. Others like FMCG, Bankex and Power are trading marginally in positives.

In the other Asian markets, Shanghai Composite is down by 0.20%, while the Hang Seng and Nikkei have gained 0.7% and 1.68% respectively. Bloomberg reports say that the Asian stocks have risen, with the regional benchmark headed for the highest close since Aug 2011, over confidence that the US policy makers will reach a budget deal and that the Bank of Japan will add to the economic stimulus.

Back home, Auto stocks are trading higher. Bajaj Auto, Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors are among the leading index gainers, gaining more than 2% each. Metals continue to hold their wining momentum, and stocks like Tata Steel, Jindal Steel, Sterlite Industries and Hindalco are trading higher in the range of 1%-1.5%. Others like Wipro, Tata Power, Hero MotoCorp and SBI are among those in the positive terrtiory.

HDFC is the worst performing stock this morning, down 1.33% at Rs 835 per share. FMCG heavyweights HUL and ITC have dropped 0.18% and 0.17% respectively so far. ICICI Bank, NTPC and L&T are also trading on the lower end.

The market breadth, which indicates the overall health of the market, is strong. On the BSE, 1384 shares have advanced, 820 shares have declined and 102 shares are unchanged.
