Markets Close Higher, Sun Pharma Gains 3.44%

The Indian indices witnessed a positive trading day today. The markets opened higher and remained in a very narrow range, holding the morning gains throughout the day.

The Indian indices witnessed a positive trading day today. The markets opened higher and remained in a very narrow range, holding the morning gains throughout the day. Both the headline indices moved higher and closed in green, with the Sensex up 0.57% and Nifty up 0.56%.

In the peer Asian markets, Shanghai Composite closed marginally lower by 0.01%, while Hang Seng and Nikkei were higher 0.57% and 2.34% respectively. Media reports said that the Japanese stocks soared to again lead a broad rally for the Asian markets today, as the Nikkei Stock Average breezed over the 10,000-point mark for its highest finish since early Apr 2012 on the back of strong gains for the financial and exporter shares.

The European indices also opened strongly and are trading higher as of now, with the FTSE, CAC and DAX seeing gains in the range of 0.2%-0.54%. According to Bloomberg reports, European stocks climbed, as Standard & Poor’s raised Greece’s credit rating and investors awaited economic reports from the US and Germany.

Dow Jones Futures is currently trading 70 points or 0.53% up at 13352.5, indicating a positive sentiment in the US markets.

Back home, Auto, Healthcare and Metals were among the best performing indices, finishing the day higher by over 1.5%. Other indices like IT, Oil & Gas and Teck closed higher in the positive territory. On the other hand, Capital Goods, FMCG and Consumer Durables were down in the range of 0.05%-0.62%.

Sun Pharma is the leading index gainer, up 3.44% at Rs 761.6 per share. Other stocks like Tata Motors, ONGC, Wipro and Jindal Steel gained more than 2%. Infosys, HDFC Bank, Cipla, TCS, Bajaj Auto were among the stocks that closed positive. M&M, Dr Reddy's Labs and GAIL India were each up by less than 1%.

HDFC continued to be the worst performing stock, lower by 1.83% at Rs 830.75 per share. L&T and ITC both lost over 1%. ICICI Bank, NTPC, HUL and SBI also finished the day in the negative territory.

The market breadth was almost positive. Out of the 3105 stocks traded on the BSE, 1651 advanced, 1310 declined and 144 remained unchanged.
