Sensex Slumps Over 100 Points, Nifty Holds 5800

The Indian markets opened on a negative note, saw volatile trade throughout the day but was not able to hold the mid-session gains. Nifty was down by 40 points to close the day at 5810 and Sensex closed at 19,228, down by 97 points

The Indian markets opened on a negative note, saw volatile trade throughout the day but was not able to hold the mid-session gains. Nifty was down by 40 points to close the day at 5810 and Sensex closed at 19,228, down by 97 points. Both the indices ended in red by 0.62% and 0.50% respectively.

The advance–decline ratio ended on a negative side at the end of the day. On the NSE, 634 shares closed in green, while 748 shares ended the day in red.

Top 5 Nifty Gainers: Tata Steel closed the day with gains of 3% as the top Nifty gainer, followed by Sesa Goa, Tata Power, Bajaj Auto and Infosys.

Top 5 Nifty Losers: Ranbaxy Labs ended the day as the top Nifty loser, down by 3.8%, followed by Bank Of Baroda, IndusInd Bank, PNB and NTPC.

Eight out of the 13 sectors ended on a negative note. Bankex is the top loser, down by 136 points, Capital Goods and Consumer Durables are down by 114 and 64 points respectively, Oil & Gas and FMCG are also down by 78 points and 15 points correspondingly. Mid-Caps and Small-Caps ended on a positive note.

The Asian markets closed on a mixed note. Nikkei closed down by 25 points. Hang Seng ended on a flat note, while China’s Shanghai Composite, Straits Times, and Taiwan indices ended on a positive note.

Buzzers: Ranbaxy Labs was down by 3.4% as the date for the Supreme Court hearing about the public interest litigation was declared as June 24.  The hearing is likely to give directions to cancel the manufacturing license issued to Ranbaxy Labs and prosecute its directors for allegedly selling adulterated medicines. The stock made a new low at Rs 342.70.

Nifty managed to close above the 5800 level. Going ahead, we could see an up-move above this level.
