Markets End Weak, Metals Down 3.5%

The Indian markets ended on a weaker note this evening. However, the markets witnessed some profit-booking rally after the mid-session but could not manage to hold their gains. The Nifty ended at 5886, down by 21 points and the Sensex closed at 19,748, down by 56 points.

The advance–decline ratio ended on the negative side in the closing session. On the NSE, 1330 shares closed in green, while 1966 shares ended the day in red.

Top Nifty Gainers: Ambuja Cements closed the day up by 4.12%, followed by ITC, Hero MotoCorp, Sun Pharma and M&M.

Top Nifty Losers: Hindalco closed the day down by 7.5%, followed by Sesa Goa, PNB, Coal India and HUL.

Almost all the sector ended in red. Metals ended down by 254 points, followed by Bankex and Capital Goods, which were down by 148 points and 78 points respectively, Auto and Oil & Gas also ended on a negative note, down by 63 points and 30 points correspondingly. Mid-Caps and Small-Caps were down by more than 45 points.

The Asian markets closed on a mixed note. The Nikkei market closed as the top loser, down by 432 points. Hang Seng ended on a positive note, up by 67 points. KOSPI and Straits Times ended on a flat note.

Buzzers: Tata Steel made a new 52-week low at Rs 216.65 after the Mumbai Police found Tata steel officer in connection with the alleged suicide of the company's former Chief of Corporate Communication. The stock broke a major support at Rs 220. If it remains below this level, we may see the level of Rs 200 in the next few days.

Nifty ended below its technical level of 5900. For the next trading session, 5860 will be a crucial support level.
