A Directionless Day Ends In Nominal Gains

The headline indices remained flat till the end of day’s gains. The Nifty ended 7 points higher on 5685, while the Sensex was up by 18 points at 19184.
The NSE 50 and the BSE 30 indices opened minorly in positive but remained flat till the end of day’s trades. There were no major triggers to take them in any direction as such. The Nifty ended 7 points higher on 5685, while the Sensex was up by 18 points at 19184. The indices ended up by 0.13% and 0.10% respectively.
The advance-decline ratio ended on the negative side in the closing session. On the NSE, 1592 shares closed in green, while 1767 shares ended the day in red.
Top 5 Nifty Gainers: Jindal Steel closed with the highest gains, up by 7.7%. JP Associates, Sesa Goa, NTPC and Reliance Infra were among the others trading positive.
Top 5 Nifty Losers: BHEL finished the day down by 19.2%, followed by Asian Paints, BPCL, Bharti Airtel and Larsen & Turbo.
9 out of the 13 sectors closed in the green. Metals was the top gainer up by 174 points. The index saw an up-trade with good volumes today, as commodity prices appreciated at the end of the last week. This was followed by Bankex, up by 110 points, and IT, which gained 67 points. Mid-Caps and Small-Caps were also up by 15 points. Capital Goods and Auto were seen in trading lower by 287 points and 46 points respectively.
The Nikkei market was the top loser among its Asian peers, dropping 208 points. Hang Seng was up by 31 points, and Shanghai and Taiwan Weighted also remained in the green.
Buzzer: JP Associates saw higher net profits in Q1, which came in at Rs 334 crore. The stock was being hammered over the past few days. Today, it saw some strength to move up by 5.7% and close at Rs 31.40.
The Nifty traded in a very narrow range for today’s session. Tomorrow’s opening may decide some direction for the index.
