Top 5 Mid-Cap Turnaround Companies

A roundup of the top 5 companies in the Mid-Cap space which turned around into profits in Q2FY14 after underperforming in the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal.

Last week in this column, we had looked at the top 5 turnaround companies in the Small-Cap space. Moving on with the series, let's take a look at the same phenomenon at the Mid-Cap space, considering companies in descending order of market capitalisation (over Rs 250 crore but less than Rs 1000 crore).

In the recently concluded September 2013 quarter, the company posted a profit of Rs 0.54 crore against a loss of Rs 2.5 crore in the same quarter previous fiscal. Its market capitalisation stands at Rs 910.01 crore.

Hindustan Construction Company: Hindustan Construction Company, together with its subsidiaries, engages in the engineering and construction, real estate, infrastructure and urban development and management businesses primarily in India.

After registering a loss of Rs 17.87 crore in Q2FY13, the company turned into the black for the quarter ended September 2013, posting a profit of Rs 31.6 crore. Its market capitalisation stands at Rs 828 crore.

VIP Industries: VIP Industries engages in the manufacture and sale of luggage products and accessories in India and internationally. The company operates in three segments, viz. luggage and accessories, furniture and ladies' handbags.

Having posted a loss of Rs 1.8 crore in Q2FY13, the company turned around in Q2FY13 into a profit of Rs 4.3 crore. Its market capitalisation stands at Rs 805.41 crore.

Shalimar Productions: Shalimar Productions is in the media and media products business in India. It produces, distributes and trades in music albums, short films and movies under the Shalimar banner. The company offers films in Rajasthani and other regional languages, as well as song albums in regional languages. It is also involved in training students in acting, dance and music.

With a market capitalisation of Rs 720.51 crore, the company made a profit of Rs 0.27 crore in Q2FY14 after posting a loss of Rs 0.26 crore for the same quarter previous fiscal.

TV Today Network: TV Today Network operates in the TV and radio broadcasting business in the country. It operates news channels including Aaj Tak, 24-hour English news channel Headlines Today, Hindi news channel Tez, and Dilli Aaj Tak, a metro-centric channel.

The company posted a net profit of Rs 12.83 crore for Q2FY14 as against a loss of Rs 9.15 crore reported during the September quarter of FY13. The market capitalisation of the company stands at Rs 699.55 crore.
