Adani Gas Stock Explodes 12%: What Triggered Today’s Massive Rally?

Adani Total Gas shares surged over 12 per cent amid positive sentiment around Adani Group companies and an over 11-fold jump in trading volumes.

Key Takeaways

Adani-total-gas-ltd-228347">Adani Total Gas turned out to be one of the biggest movers on Dalal Street on Friday, September 18, with the stock jumping over 12 per cent during the session. The shares touched an Intraday high of Rs 657.90 on the NSE, compared with the previous close of around Rs 587.

Interestingly, there was no major fresh corporate announcement from Adani Total Gas that could independently explain such a sharp move. Instead, the rally appears to have been driven by a combination of positive sentiment around Adani Group companies and unusually high trading activity in the stock.

Jefferies Commentary Brings Adani Stocks Into Focus
One of the key triggers came from Jefferies. The global financial services firm highlighted several growth drivers across Adani Group’s infrastructure and energy businesses following interactions at its India Forum. The commentary focused on areas including capacity expansion, transmission opportunities, ports and Logistics, trading businesses and improving cash-flow prospects across different Adani Group companies. Several Adani stocks moved higher following the commentary.

Adani Total Gas was the standout performer. It was already trading around 4.4 per cent higher at Rs 612.80 at 9:27 am before the rally gathered further momentum during the session. It is worth noting that the available reports do not indicate a fresh Jefferies recommendation specifically on Adani Total Gas. The stock appears to have benefited from the broader positive sentiment surrounding the group.

Trading Volumes Explode 11 Times
There was another factor that made Friday's move difficult to ignore: volumes. Around 58.74 lakh Adani Total Gas shares had changed hands on the NSE, compared with an average volume of about 5.25 lakh shares. That translates into trading activity of more than 11 times the usual level. Such a sharp increase in volumes alongside a double-digit price rise indicates significantly higher market participation during the session.
